Garden Tips - May

Leaf Rollers:

These are very common this month, especially on vinca major. One environmentally friendly insecticide you can use is Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt).

Consider the use of ground covers in shady areas where St. Augustine grass does not do well. Go to Texas Smartscape to see a number of groundcovers that will do well in our area.

Vegetable Gardens:

Now is the time to plant peas and okra. For more information on vegetable gardens, click here.

Pruning:

Prune your spring flowering shrubs after they bloom. Avoid formal shearing where possible.

Weeds:

Start weeding early in the flower garden. Early competition with small plants can delay flowering. A mulch will discourage weed growth and make those that do come through easier to pull.
