A collaborative project of the AgriLife Extension Service office of Parker
and the Parker County Master Gardener Association (PCMGA)
Herbarium (her·bar·i·um):
a collection of dried plants mounted, labeled and systematically arranged
for use in a scientific study. It is also a place where such a collection
is kept.
The mission is to obtain and preserve native plant specimens for the
purpose of educating citizens about the importance of recognizing and
utilizing plants that will prosper in Parker County landscapes and become
knowledgeable about ranchland and prairie vegetation.

Jon Green, Extension Agent, oversees the project. Consultants include
Earl Hogan, who retired from the NRCS several years ago, and Bob O’ Kennon,
Botanist at the Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT). They will
determine which specimens to collect in 2008. Current plans are to collect
forbs (wildflowers) and grasses from various sites throughout the county.
Jeff Quayle is the botanist who has collected the 166 specimens in our
herbarium. They were all taken from the Parker County Poor Farm in the
spring of 2007.
The specimens will be used to teach Master Gardeners how to identify
native plants and then share their expertise with the public. A special
collection will be taken to schools, public events and speaker’s bureau
presentations. Photos of the entire collection will be available on the
PCMGA website.
