In late winter of 2005, Parker County Master Gardeners
became involved with the planting and maintenance of the landscape at the
Springtown Legends Museum. The almost century-old building had been a
family home place and was donated as a site for the Springtown Legends
Museum, which houses a collection of artifacts about the early years of
Springtown. The gardens had fallen into disrepair and this proved a
challenge because it had been neglected for so many years.
Much of the initial time was spent in cleaning up years of unmanaged
growth and preparing the planting beds. The Master Gardeners rescued the
front beds and replanted them with native and adapted annuals. An old bed
of iris and lily-of-the-valley was cleaned and then interspersed with
hollies. Bluebonnets are featured in another side bed of iris and vinca.
The back bed contains a white spirea with an old wisteria vine clinging to
the back of an outbuilding.
A rose bed has been created in the rear of the property to demonstrate the
toughness of EarthKind roses. Aside from watering, until they were
established, these roses have received no additional care. They have
proven to be winners by blooming from early April until the first hard
frost.
The goal is to establish a landscape featuring native plants that are
indigenous to the area and are in keeping with the earlier period
represented by the museum. Citizens of the Parker County area are
encouraged to visit the site at 839 N. Main St. to see the progress being
made and the type of plants that will thrive in the soils and climatic
conditions of the area.
