ABOUT THE BOOK

The book consisting of three major sections.  EarthKind Horticulture provides basic information on how to prepare and maintain your landscape.  Plant Descriptions consists of 14 chapters.  Each chapter is devoted to a specific plant type.  Details of 375 plants are provided to assist you in selecting the right plant for your landscape.  In addition, this section provides chapters on fruit and nut trees, turf grass, and wildflowers.  Special Gardens includes chapters on container gardening, vegetable gardens, and butterfly and hummingbird gardens.

Following these three sections, the book contains a glossary of terms used in the book as well as an appendix providing a monthly checklist of activities.  An index at the end allows plants to be quickly found.

FORWARD

The Parker County Master Gardener Association compiled this book to bring information to all gardeners, including newcomers, in this area.  If you are concerned with water usage, soil improvement, pest management, restoring and maintaining a healthy environment, and selecting plants that are native or adapted to our county, this book is written with you in mind.

The Association would like to recognize the support provided to our organization by Texas AgriLife Extension Service and the Parker County Extension Agent, Jon Green.  Some of the information provided in this book was developed by Texas A & M University.  The Association would like to recognize the efforts of Dr. Steve George, Dr. Dan Lineberger, Dr. William Welch, and Dr. Doug Welsh, as well as the other teachers and scientists who contribute to the Aggie Horticultural Network at:  http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/tamuhort.html.

Thanks and happy gardening,
Parker County Master Gardeners

This book is dedicated to La Donna Stockstill, President of the Parker County Master Gardener Association in 2004. La Donna conceived this project, developed the structure and led the efforts of the Association. Without her vision and passion, this book would not have been possible.
